Before Dhani Barragán gave shape to his “Deconstructed Pop” universe, he was already doing something very much his own: taking characters from the popular imagination and moving them into a territory with more weight, more physical presence, more emotional charge, and a more personal reading.

This early work, dated 2018, seems to be inspired by Francis, the eccentric character from Super Paper Mario, but it moves him away from the screen and turns him into an almost tangible creature.

It no longer functions as a flat video game character. Here, it gains body, texture, and a presence closer to a creature observed in a field notebook than to an original digital image.

Dhani brings it into the real world.

It is not yet “Deconstructed Pop”, but it already contains its germ.
