KAWS introduced the Companion (Flayed) Open Edition in 2016 in collaboration with Medicom Toy Japan — an Art Toy, half anatomical and half cartoon, that transformed the act of collecting into a reflection on identity, pop culture, and the human body. Today, it is regarded as a key piece within the Art Toy Movement.

This particular unit belongs to an early 2016 production batch, identifiable because the packaging does not include the word “(FLAYED)” printed on the outer bag — a detail that distinguishes it from later standardized editions and confirms that this piece is part of the initial production phase of the Flayed Companion.
Only a limited number of these “simplified packaging” variants were released before Medicom Toy updated the design, and collectors recognize them as rare “first-wave” editions.
